“We Are Lions. We meet the needs of our local communities and the world. Our 1.3 million men and women in 200 countries and geographic areas conduct vision and health screenings, build parks, support eye hospitals, award scholarships, assist youth, provide help in time of disaster and much more. Join us in making our communities and the world better places to live.” The above quote taken from the Lions International Web site http://www.lionsclubs.org/
goes a long way to sum up what Lions are all about. There’s nothing complicated about being a Lion – just a bunch of local men and women who have a wish to give something back to the community.
Before being a Lion, I realized there were many things I wanted to do for the community but was unable to do as an individual. Becoming a member of the Oak Ridges Lions Club enabled me join with others in acting as a group to get things done.
The motto of Lions is “We Serve”. This is the basis of everything we do – the only thing that changes are improvements to the way that we serve. In referring to “We Serve”, the International President for the Association of Lions Clubs for this year, Mahendra Amarasuriya, says, “The world has changed and we Lions need to change as well.” This Lions year the Oak Ridges Lions Club will be striving to find new ways to attract members and to make meetings more interesting. We recognize the need to target younger members to enable our club to grow into the future. We will continue to strengthen partnerships with other community groups. An example is the partnership with the Oak Ridges Friends of the Environment (www.oakridgesfriendsoftheenvironment.ca/index.html).
We continue to thank our corporate and private sponsors who help out in so many ways. We also thank the many volunteers without whom many projects could not be carried out. Look for us and support our BBQs around town. Every penny earned is returned to the community in some way.
